Università degli Studi di Padova e BTS Biogas insieme per sviluppare il progetto Più-Biogas App

L’attività di ricerca si propone di aumentare di almeno il 10% la resa e la produzione degli impianti di biogas

Obiettivo del progetto è realizzare uno strumento per la gestione degli impianti che BTS Biogas metterà a disposizione delle aziende per gestire le biomasse in ingresso, i parametri ambientali ed il microbioma della digestione anaerobica

Padova-Affi, 6 dicembre 2021 - BTS Biogas, leader tecnologico nello sviluppo e nella costruzione di impianti biogas e biometano, ha attivato una collaborazione con l’Università degli Studi di Padova per sviluppare un progetto di ricerca che ha l’obiettivo di aumentare, di almeno del 10%, la resa di biogas.

Lo smaltimento sostenibile e la valorizzazione dei rifiuti organici sono una delle maggiori sfide a cui far fronte a livello mondiale. Il biogas è un’energia rinnovabile che consente di conciliare queste due esigenze perché viene prodotto utilizzando scarti organici. Tuttavia, la stagionalità di numerosi sottoprodotti della filiera agricola e zootecnica che alimentano gli impianti di biogas può determinare importanti fluttuazioni produttive, con ripercussioni negative sull’economicità degli impianti. Nell’attuale processo produttivo non sono presenti metodi efficienti per il monitoraggio in tempo reale della componente microbica, vera e propria key-driver della digestione anaerobica. È quindi indispensabile un attento monitoraggio del processo produttivo, del materiale organico che alimenta l’impianto e lo sviluppo di modelli predittivi per ottimizzare la produzione interessate a massimizzare la resa dei propri impianti di biogas.

Per rispondere a queste esigenze nasce il progetto di ricerca biennale Più-Biogas App, sostenuto da BTS Biogas e condotto da due ricercatori del Dipartimento di Agronomia, Animali, Alimenti, Risorse naturali e Ambiente e del Dipartimento di Biologia dell’Università degli Studi di Padova. L’iniziativa, tra i vari obiettivi, mira ad implementare un metodo di analisi innovativo, rapido ed efficiente per lo studio delle dinamiche di popolazione microbica che permette la fermentazione della materia organica, da consultare tramite una app dedicata.

Si tratta del primo progetto di ricerca che indaga l’attività microbiologica che avviene ogni giorno all’interno del digestore. Il progetto si prefigge non solo di ottenere un database per catalogare i microrganismi e le informazioni ambientali e di processo, ma punta anche a sviluppare un algoritmo per confrontare i risultati dei monitoraggi e delle tecniche per aumentare la resa energetica del biogas. Lo scopo è realizzare un software che aiuterà a massimizzare la produzione di biogas riducendo i costi di esercizio. I risultati e la tecnologia sviluppata saranno poi condivisi con altre realtà aziendali interessate a massimizzare la resa dei propri impianti di biogas.

Il progetto, a cui collabora anche S&C Best - società specializzata nello sviluppo di soluzioni per l’aumento dell’efficienza e della resa economica degli impianti a biogas, tramite additivi come ad esempio gli enzimi di ultima generazione - ha ottenuto il finanziamento della Fondazione Cariverona nell’ambito dell’obiettivo 2 «Valorizzazione del Capitale Umano e Promozione di Opportunità per i Giovani».

«Il progetto Più-Biogas App è un esempio importante di valorizzazione del Capitale Umano che ogni anno l’Università degli Studi di Padova contribuisce a formare – dichiara il prof. Grazie al supporto della Fondazione Cariverona e di BTS Biogas, due giovani ricercatori, infatti, potranno lavorare fianco a fianco con docenti dell’Ateneo patavino ed aziende leader nel campo della digestione anaerobica per accelerare il processo di trasferimento tecnologico tra Università e contesto economico nazionale. Approcci biotecnologici e bioinformatici, sviluppati insieme ai colleghi Laura Treu e Stefano Campanaro, contribuiranno a fornire una soluzione innovativa per ottimizzare le rese in biogas di numerosi impianti fortemente diffusi in Veneto ed in molte altre regioni italiane».

Partnership between the University of Padua and BTS Biogas to develop the Più-Biogas App

The research project aims to increase the yield and production of biogas plants by at least 10%.

Padova-Affi, 6 dicembre 2021 - BTS Biogas, a technological leader in the development and construction of biogas and biomethane plants, has partnered with the University of Padua to develop a research project which aims to increase biogas yield by at least 10%.

Achieving the sustainable disposal and valorization of organic waste are two of the biggest challenges facing the world. Biogas is a renewable energy produced using organic waste which reconciles these two needs, however the seasonal nature of many of the by-products of the agricultural and livestock sectors which feed biogas plants can lead to significant fluctuations in production, with negative repercussions on the economic viability of the plants. In the current production process, there are no efficient methods for real-time monitoring of the microbial component, which is the key driver of anaerobic digestion. Close monitoring of the production process, the organic material feeding the plant and the development of predictive models are therefore essential to optimize production and maximize the yield of the biogas plants.

The two-year research project Più-Biogas App, supported by BTS Biogas and carried out by two researchers from the Department of Agronomy, Animals, Food, Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Biology of the University of Padua, was created to meet these needs. The initiative, as one of its many objectives, aims to implement an innovative, rapid, and efficient method of analysis for the study of microbial population dynamics which allows the fermentation of organic matter to be monitored through a dedicated app.

This is the first research project to investigate the microbiological activity which takes place every day in the digester. The goal is to obtain a database to catalogue microorganisms and environmental and process information and develop an algorithm to compare the results of the systems and techniques used to increase the energy yield of biogas. The aim is to develop software which will help maximize biogas production while reducing operating costs. The results and the technology developed will then be shared with other companies interested in maximizing the yield of their biogas plants.

S&C Best, a company specializing in the development of solutions to increase the efficiency and economic yield of biogas plants through additives such as latest-generation enzymes, is also involved in the project which has obtained funding from the Cariverona Foundation under Objective 2 "Enhancement of Human Capital and Promotion of Opportunities for Young People".

The Più-Biogas App project is an important example of valuing the Human Capital which the University of Padua helps train every year," stated Lorenzo Favaro, Professor of Agricultural Microbiology at the University of Padua and the scientific lead of the project. "Thanks to the support of the Cariverona Foundation and BTS Biogas, two young researchers will be able to work alongside professors from the University of Padua and leading companies in the field of anaerobic digestion to accelerate the process of technology transfer between the university and the national economy. Biotechnological and bioinformatic approaches, developed together with colleagues Laura Treu and Stefano Campanaro, will help provide an innovative solution to optimize the biogas yields of numerous plants which are widespread in the Veneto region and in many other Italian regions".
